Occupational Therapy for Sensory Processing Difficulties

Sensory processing difficulties involve the ability to register, discriminate, adapt, and respond appropriately, both physically and emotionally, to sensory input from our bodies and the environment.

A child with sensory processing difficulties can be hypersensitive (overresponsive) or hyposensitive (under-responsive) to a particular sensory input.

For example, children who are overresponsive to loud noise may be seen to overrespond to sounds that are tolerable to others. They may then respond to this by covering their ears.
